It’s simple: Don’t upgrade the firmware while there is a disc in the tray.
Now that we have that out of the way…
This is a great player! The Netflix compatibility is superb. The Blu-Ray load times are never more than 10-12 seconds (in my experience). I’ve watched everything from Planet Earth, to Dark Knight, to UP!. They all look amazing in their own unique way.
The upconversion for standard (480p) DVDs looks as good as I could ever hope for. The only way they could be better is to actually BE 1080p. But let’s be honest; some movies just aren’t meant to be seen in Hi-Def (ex: Raging Bull).
Bottom line: if you are looking for a good BD Player at a reasonable price, this one is perfectly adequate. No, scratch that. It’s EXCELLENT!
ALSO, keep in mind that the player can only look as good as your TV allows it! (In my case, I’m using a Samsung UN46B6000 46-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV)

Like some other posters, my unit locked up after upgrading firmware. I called tech support and was able to resolve the issues without another firmware upgrade!
In hopes this is helpful to anyone else with this issue, I am posting instructions here:
* Start with the drive bay empty
* Turn the power off
* Unplug the system
* Press and hold the power button for 20+ seconds (When I started, it beeped even with the unit unplugged…)
* Leave the unit unplugged for at least 2 minutes.
When you restart, you may need to reset your IP address by clicking on the wireless connection and entering your Wireless password again.
If this doesn’t work, then you still need to apply the firmware update, but there is a good chance it will work and you can save yourself some trouble.
If you can’t get the dvd out of the drive bay, then power off and power back on and hit the eject button. There is also a code for your remote (6982? Sorry, I don’t remember.) that you can get from tech support to eject the disk, but this wasn’t necessary for me.
Kudos to the Samsung after-market team from taking this product from failure to passable.

I have seldom reviewed products. Mostly because I am open to give some leeway to a piece of technology when they malfunction. However, I have been tested with this piece of junk for the past 9 months.
IF and when the player works, it works good. But mostly you will be saddled with freeze frames, out of sync audio or plain boot up failures. Loud hums and mechanical noises are also a norm. If you think and hope a firmware upgrade will resolve issues, please read the reviews to find that the upgrades have mostly ADDED to the problems!
If you are out of the measly 90 day parts and labor warranty, you need to pay to ship the unit out to their service center, and also pay for the labor. Samsung generously covers the cost of the parts! ’smirk’. The cost of labor will almost get you another player! As many have reported, their ’serviced’ returns are mostly worse off, than before the unit was sent to them.
Folks, this is a genuine LEMON. So please spare yourself heartaches and headaches, and spend your money on a player from another maker. Samsung makes great TV’s but blu ray player…naah! Amazon should really take this product off it’s shelves. It must be costing them more to ship out replacements!
Feel free to ignore the warnings and buy this player. But do yourself one last favor before you buy this. Read the rants of others who have ignored the warnings, and thought they might get lucky with a problem free player. You may not be the lucky one…just a thought.

I purchased the BD-P1600 a few weeks ago. I was surprised to learn that it would only connect to the Internet for streaming movies and BD-LIVE by using Samsung’s USB Wireless adapter, so I bought one. Now, I feel that this player does a fine job of playing both Blu-ray and regular DVD’s. It also does an impressive job of connecting to my secure wireless network (it liked WEP router security much better than WPA Personal). Even though the wireless adapter is inside a wooden TV cabinet with other electronics, it still connects to my wireless network almost instantly.
So, even though it is a bit noisy, when first starting a DVD, and even though the people at Samsung were virtually worthless at helping me get it to talk to my wireless network, initially, I would recomment this player.
