Blu-ray Disc was created to match the accelerating growth in digital consumer electronics and computer technology. The platform supports the convergence of film, music, gaming and other computer entertainment in a single standard. Sony Computer Entertainment's adoption of Blu-ray Disc ROM technology in the next-generation PlayStation 3 system was announced at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo.
Capacity Without Compromise
Everything that DVD can do, Blu-ray Disc does and more. Blue laser technology enables up to 50 GB of storage -- five times the capacity of DVD. That’s room for nine hours of HD. Or 23 hours of SD. Or tens of thousands of songs. Unbelievable data storage.
Versatiltiy Beyond the Ordinary
From movies to music to games to PC software and file backup, Blu-ray Disc is your solution! The system embraces pre-recorded titles (BD-ROM), discs that you can record yourself (BD-R) and discs you can re-record over and over again (BD-RE). So we can anticipate not only BD players for your living room, but also BD recorders, BD-based game consoles, BD drives for your personal computer and even BD camcorders using compact 8 cm (3") discs!

Sony Bdp-S1 Simply Outstanding
I purchased this unit 3 yrs ago for 0.00. Orig: B000DZS0G8,000.00. I had heard about and read about all the issues that plagued this player. I have enjoyed pristine blu ray video and audio, and outstanding upconversion with this unit. For some reason, about a year ago I got the itch to replace with something better, maybe with DTS-Master audio. I have tried and tried many players, hoping to top the performance of this unit, but it just isn't there. Oppo Bdp-83 video was a tad better but not the audio. Pioneer Bdp-05fd, had average video and audio and poor upconversion. My point is I still go back to my Sony Bdp-s1 everytime and I always say that it is simply the best. I will wait, read, research, but I am sticking with Sony when it comes to blu ray. Don't get me wrong, I have tried the lower end Sony players, 300 series, 500 series, etc. None of them compare to the Bdp-s1. I keep up with all the firmware upgrades by down loading, and burning to a disc, and have zero ploblems watching any disc.

Unstable and glitchy
Bought this unit for two reasons because it was on sale and it was Sony. While the Picture is flawless and the sound is great, it doesn't always work as it should.
I have had problems with this unit not reading some Blu-ray movies. I thought since it was a brand new movie maybe the movie was defective so I returened it to the store and got another new one. When I put it in it did the exact same thing. So I went and tried the movie in a friends Blu-ray player and it worked just fine, but still wouldn't work in the Sony. Along with that it has locked up several times on us while watching a movie. I then had to reboot the player and then find where I was in the movie again.

Region Capacity
My question is that blue-ray could reproduce movies of all regions, i mean, movies in the Unites States are region 1 but it changes depends of the country, but i want to know if it plays all regions movies!!! Thanks

the other reviews; HOGWASH
Just a post to say that people must realize there are many people who are unhappy with the demise of hd-dvd, so much so that they are crowind the blu-ray reviews and threads with terrible reviews, when they probably have never even owned a blu-ray player. I owned this model and it played blu-ray discs perfectly. If you're in the market for a play, though, buy a newer model. This is the first blu-ray player and there are many features it lacked due to it being released so early on in the format. Just remember, usually the terrible reviews are from angry hd-dvd fanboys whose format died a miserable death, as well it should have because Blu-ray holds more on a disc (20gb), has much better bitrate possibilities and now has the support of every major movie studio. Blu-ray is simply the high definition dvd.

Get a new player with hdmi 1.3
This thing is a piece of junk. Get a PS3. You can then wirelessly upgrade firmware. PS3 is still the best and cheapest Blu-ray player out.
